Perish That Thought
Blank pages or empty words,
I don't know which is worse.
High minded essays on esoteric subjects,
Or stanzas of meaningless verse.
Write what we know or what we are taught?
Get a real job?
Oh, perish that thought.
Deep conversation over coffee communions,
A sharing of bread and mind.
Liturgical wafers disguised as Girl Scout cookies,
Who knows what we may find.
Do we repent and live as we ought?
Do we behave?
Oh, perish that thought.
Hubris is the most seductive of sins,
For it gives us the confidence to dare.
But as old Oedipus learned,
When you play with fire
You get burned,
And life just doesn't seem fair.
Dinner time chatter and late night confessions,
Fear of what we may learn.
Confidence shared is confidence broken,
Tales are told out of turn.
Stop having fun before we are caught?
Live our lives safe?
Oh, perish that thought,
Perish that thought.
