Kite Stick in the Wire
Years ago when my son was ten
We saw a kite stuck in a power line
Stretched across the road where
Ten thousand cars a day pass under.
The kite was new and fluttered and
Fought to free itself.
The next day it hung still,
Unmoving and defeated.
Each day I drove my son to school and
Each day we looked and
Each day we saw the kite
Become more tattered.
A year went by and all that was left was
Some plastic and sticks and string.
Another year and another,
I no longer drove my son to school.
The remnants of the kite grew smaller until
It was reduced to a single stick,
Unnoticed unless you looked for it.
My son has a child of his own now and
No longer lives at home.
Our world and our lives change with
Every day and week and
Every month and year.
But every day I drive under that power line
And every day I see that single stick,
Caught forever and reminding me of
Years ago when my son was ten.
